GEORGE NEWS - A taxi that was allegedly speeding down Kaaimans Pass caused an accident involving 15 people on Monday 17 June at approximately 15:30.
No injuries were reported.
Video footage the George Herald received shows the taxi travelling from George to Wilderness crashing through two vehicles, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Kia hatchback, that were travelling in separate lanes next to each other in the same direction as the taxi.
In the video it can be seen how the taxi carries on driving to where it was allegedly forced to stop at the Dolphin's Point viewpoint due to a flat tyre. After the taxi came to a standstill, an eyewitness performed a citizen's arrest on the driver.
"He put so many people's lives in danger and I didn't want him running away," said the eyewitness, who wishes to stay anonymous.
The Kia was travelling in the right lane towards Wilderness at the time of the accident. The Land Cruiser was next to it in the left lane.
According to the eyewitness the taxi driver said that his vehicle's brakes failed and he was unable to stop in time.
"The taxi driver alleged that he heard a loud bang at the top op the pass near the speed camera, after which his brakes stopped working. The taxi was full of passengers," he said.
By the time of going to print it could not be confirmed whether any arrests were made.
