GEORGE NEWS - The eighth Funda Mzantsi National Championship, a reading festival for book clubs, will be hosted at the George Civic Centre from 2 to 5 October.
The National Library of South Africa's Centre for the Book started the Funda Mzantsi project to support and assist communities in establishing and sustaining book clubs.
In 2013 the Department of Correctional Services decided to join hands with the project when they realised what a big a role the National Library of South Africa's Centre for the Book played in the rehabilitation of their inmates.
The championship takes the form of a competition where all Centre for the Book affiliated book clubs compete against each other.
Winners of the competition take home medals and trophies. The George Municipality has been a partner in the initiative since 2016 and will be hosting the eighth championship in George together with other stakeholders.
In 2015, correctional services personnel accompanied by inmates from various correctional services facilities walked the streets of Thembalethu and Conville, handing out books to raise awareness for the Funda Mzantsi competition. Photo: Myron Rabinowitz
