GEORGE NEWS - Last year ended with various successes for the men and women in blue as four suspects were arrested on the last weekend in December on charges of house breaking, robbery and theft.
On Friday 31 December at approximately 04:00, George police responded to a house robbery in Bokmakierie Street in Eden. Upon arrival they found a man (88) who had sustained multiple injuries during the robbery.
The victim was taken to hospital for further medical care and has since been discharged.
"This response led police to Pikkewyn Street, in the same area, where a man armed with a firearm was cornered by security officials. It is alleged that an altercation ensued with the security officials and the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the hand. He was taken to hospital, but was later discharged and remains in police custody. The suspect (25) was scheduled to appear in court on Monday 3 January on a charge of house robbery," said Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies.
The handgun, a revolver stolen during the robbery, was also recovered.
Later the same day police arrested a suspect after he was apprehended on a business premises in Nywerheid Street in the industrial area. A laptop and three cell phones were recovered. The suspect (27), is facing a charge of business robbery. He will appear in court once charged.
On Saturday 1 January two suspects were arrested after a burglary at a business in Wilderness Heights. This arrest also led to the recovery of stolen items, which were concealed in the bushes adjacent to the scene. The police confiscated a safe, power tools and liquor.
Both suspects, (aged 19 and 20) were scheduled to appear in court on Monday 3 January on charges of house breaking and theft.
