GEORGE NEWS - Illegal activities, such as the burning of tyres and other recyclable items, at the controversial George municipal dump area are being investigated.
This follows a complaint that the security staff at the dump are in cahoots with the informal settlers who seize any chance they get to burn tyres to get to the steel, which they sell.
It has been alleged that the security staff, deployed by a security company that is employed by the George Municipality, allow tyres and other steel wire items to be dropped off instead of turning it away because they take a cut. A member of the public sent in a photo showing security staff standing next to burning wire fencing.
The photo was forwarded to the George Municipality for comment.
"The landfill site was visited on Tuesday 5 May by Siphiwe James, acting director of community services, who has advised that the security issues be investigated by George Municipal Law Enforcement. Furthermore, a law enforcement officer will be present during the day to monitor the activities of the security services," said Chantel Edwards-Klose, George Municipality media liaison officer.
The George Municipality's landfill site was officially closed 10 years ago and only building rubble and garden refuse is supposed to be dropped off there.
