GEORGE NEWS - “I’m not sure if it was a real gun or not, but it looked and sounded real when he cocked it.” So says a cyclist who had a gun pointed at him by a masked man in Knysna Road at approximately 05:00 this morning, Friday 30 September.
The man, who wishes to have his name withheld, was cycling in the direction of town from CTM when he noticed a man who looked like a jogger, who was running towards him on the grassed area next to the road across from Mujo’s Bar and Restaurant.
“At first I didn’t think anything of it, but after a while I became suspicious. It looked to me as if he was planning to cut me off. The next thing I knew, the man, who was wearing a mask with a picture of a skull on it, jumped into the road facing me. He pulled out a gun and cocked it and I managed to escape into the oncoming lane. I don’t know if he was going to shoot, but I didn’t want to find out either,” the cyclist told George Herald this morning.
The gunman ran off and the cyclist immediately phoned the police to report the incident.
“I won’t stop running and cycling in the area. It’s one of the reasons I came here. I’ve been living in George for the last 22 years. I just feel that people should be warned and be vigilant when they are out and about,” he said. “We shouldn’t stop what we are doing, we just have to be more careful. It was quite a scary experience.”
