GEORGE NEWS - Ruan Redelinghuys, a George-based wedding photographer, has won the coveted Wedding Photographer of the Year award at this year's Admired in Africa Awards, the premier photography awards in South Africa.
The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday 11 December at Hertford Country Hotel in Lanseria, Gauteng.
"The award is a huge honour and the recognition is an incredible pat on the back for creativity in the competitive and demanding wedding photography industry," says Redelinghuys.
"The trophy in the office is a daily reminder that hard work and effort pays off." His prize was a R70 000 camera from Fuji South Africa.
He was also awarded 9th place in the Lifestyle Photography category and 5th place for Wedding Album Design. Redelinghuys first entered the competition in 2016, claiming second prize in his first year. In 2018 he placed in the top five.
He is inspired by the incredible stories that he can tell.
"I can reflect my emotions, as well as beautiful locations, through a visual medium on a regular basis. After twelve years of photographing weddings, you see light and the way it falls, reflects, creates shadows, patterns and focus in everyday life," he says.

Local achievers
Redelinghuys was not the only Garden Route photographer who stood out at the competition. With him at the awards was another George photographer, Liezel Volschenk, who received 8th place in the Wedding Photography category.
Others who excelled are Georgian Chané Labuschaghne (9th: Newborn Photography; 6th: Maternity Photography; 7th: Fashion and Fitness) and Anina Harmse from Mossel Bay who scooped first place in the Boudoir Photography category.

Admired in Africa is an annual photography and cinematography competition open to all cinematographers and photographers based in South Africa and Africa. The awards aim to recognise great work and provide an accolade for the best work in the industry.
