GEORGE NEWS - A grim picture was sketched about the current Covid-19 situation in George and the district earlier this afternoon (30 October) at a meeting of the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM).
Disaster Management Chief Gerhard Otto updated councillors on the current situation.
He said the area is not moving in the right direction and the figures are still climbing. The area of specific concern is George. Over the last month, the active cases in George increased by 89. There are currently 3901 confirmed cases in George, of which 208 are active cases.
According to Otto, it has been decided to focus on an awareness programme in George at the taxi ranks, as well as visits to taverns and bars. There they will have one-on-one meetings with owners and try to make them aware of the prevailing Covid-19 threat.
Current active cases of Covid-19 in the district:

- Bitou 14
- Knysna 48
- George 208
- Mosselbay 46
- Hessequa 12
- Kannaland 8
That brings the total amount of active cases in the district to 375.

- George 114
- Mosselbay: 71
- Hessequa 19
- Kannaland 2
In total there have been 387 deaths so far. Otto said, if compared to the beginning of the month, there have been 28 additional deaths.
He said the virus is ongoing and will be present for some time.
