Traffic law enforcement
During the morning and afternoon peak, officials are deployed at critical intersections in George to ensure the free flow of traffic. Officials are also deployed at roads where roadworks are currently underway. Traffic wardens are deployed to attend to time-constrained parking in the George CBD.
The department has a traffic minibus, with the necessary electronic equipment, that focuses on outstanding traffic fines and engages in regular roadblocks with great success. Besides traffic officers’ normal duties and visible patrolling, they assist with funeral escorts and events.
Officers patrol Go George bus routes daily to ensure buses and bus routes are safe. George Traffic Department makes sure that a safe environment is created for motorists and pedestrians by having regular speed enforcement on public roads as well as attending to ad hoc complaints in terms of speeding.
Traffic Services also focuses on illegal taxis, many of which have been impounded, and officers will continue with enforcement against illegal operators.
Traffic officials engage with schools concerning road safety education and the department provides reflective body bands to scholars to make them visible when walking the streets to school and back home.
Motor vehicle registration and licensing
Due to a vast growth in our vehicle population, the registration numbers of George have increased from five to six digits. The department has put measures in place to shorten the waiting period in queues for members of the public.
A satellite office will soon be opened in Blanco and will be utilised as a drive-through facility for the public. Clients will be able to renew their vehicle’s licence from the comfort of their vehicle. Bulk services will also be rendered at this facility.
Driver’s licences
Planning is in place to erect shelters at the Driver’s Licencing Testing Centre premises in Pacaltsdorp, to afford clients protection from harsh weather conditions. The driver’s licence section has now also been equipped with a generator to continue with service delivery during load-shedding or other power interruptions.
In a new development, a learner’s licence centre has also been established in Uniondale and will open its doors very soon.
To enhance service delivery, the Motor Vehicle and Driver’s Licence sections (MVR) have opened their doors over certain weekends to render a service to those clients who are unable to visit the centre during office hours.

With the service on a Saturday, the Traffic Department endeavours to assist driving schools and thereby reduce the waiting period for learner’s and driver’s licence bookings of applicants.

Traffic Services will continue to render quality services to the community and interact with other role players for assistance in making an exceptional difference where it counts.
