GEORGE NEWS - The construction site at the Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Thembalethu will close on Friday 15 December, with a portion of the roadway remaining closed for the safety of all road users.
Work will start again on Monday 8 January 2018. Municipal Spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose said a maintenance team will be available over this period to ensure that the temporary road signs and speed controls are maintained and are effective, and that the site remains safe at all times.
"George Municipality wishes to caution all road users to approach the construction site over the festive period with caution and to take special care for the safety and convenience of the travelling public," said Edwards-Klose.
This project consists of the following improvements to the existing road:
An upgrade of the roadway's vehicle carrying capacity and improved safety and security for all road users and pedestrians;
The upgraded roadway will include new cycle lanes, wider walkways with dignified spaces, upgraded street lighting and improved surface water drainage.
Work will resume on Monday 8 January 2018.
Construction work on this road, which forms the principal transportation route from the residential area of Thembalethu to the remainder of the George Central Business District (CBD), commenced on 1 September.
According to Edwards-Klose the condition of the existing road is inadequate for the future growth requirements of the area.
"George Municipality's objectives are to ensure that members of the Thembalethu community can use safe, affordable and reliable public transport to access social, economic and employment opportunities in the future," she said.
"The municipality and the construction company wishes all the residents of Thembalethu a blessed festive season and would like to thank the public for their patience and positive cooperation to date on this project."
