GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - If you are nuts about soup and consider yourself the best soup maker in George, this is your time to shine.
This morning, Thursday 4 August, Carl van Blerk of the Garden Route Food Pantry (GRFP) launched the Soup-A-Hero project.
This project doesn’t only give you the opportunity to convince the judges that you are the best soup maker in the area, but will also help feed hundreds of hungry people in our area this winter.
“Soup is a wonderful food product to offer during the winter and this month’s competition is all about the best butternut soup,” said Van Blerk.
A new flavour will be chosen every month, so don’t worry if your butternut isn’t the best - there are still many to come.
“Entry consists of two buckets,” explains Van Blerk. Both these buckets can be collected from their premises at 1 Glaze Street in George (next to the Takealot depot).
“One bucket must be able to take at least 10 litres of soup, which will be donated to a soup kitchen or crèche by GRFP, and the other is a small 1-litre container for the soup that will be tasted by the judges. Contestants are welcome to make more soup if they are able and willing,” says Van Blerk.

Contestants are welcome to use their own containers, but the GRFP is happy to provide them.
For this month’s entry, containers have to be collected from GRFP tomorrow as the food pantry closes for the long weekend. All soups have to be entered by next Wednesday, 10 August.
Please maintain strict health practices and do not allow your soup to stand hot for too long. Please refrigerate as soon as it has cooled down. It should preferably be delivered frozen. Entries are open to anyone – whether you are an avid home cook or a professional chef.
The winner of each month will be announced in George Herald and will receive a meal voucher for two from Upstairs at Harry’s. Other prizes may also be awarded when new sponsors join the project.
