GEORGE NEWS - Collection of green and blue refuse bags in the George municipal area has resumed this week.
The Cleansing department however pleads with the public to please stagger the putting out of green and blue bags over the next two to three weeks to enable the service provider to catch up with the backlog.
Normally, unlimited blue bags and three green bags are allowed – so, residents would ideally put out the 2/3 blue and three green bags plus a third portion of the backlog bags per week.
“We thank residents in advance for their patience as we deal with collections as quickly as possible.”
Please consider your fellow residents when putting out your blue and green bags – putting out your entire 5 week backlog of bags means that the service provider is delayed and not able to finish the required areas per day.
Refuse bags must be put out by 07:00 on the scheduled removal day. Due to lockdown regulations, the service provider is not allowed to collect bags after-hours.
If there are still some blue and green bags out by 17:00 on the day of your regular collection, please take in whatever is left and put it out with the next week’s bags.
Two blue and two green replacement bags will be distributed to participating households when bags are collected this week. Bags will be sprayed with sanitiser before distribution and collection personnel will be wearing personal protective gear.
Transfer Station and Landfill Site:
The Transfer station and Landfill Site remain also closed to the public. Both the Transfer station and Landfill site are only open to businesses who are in possession of an essential services permit. The Municipality does not issue any permits to businesses who wish to dump at these facilities.
General information refuse collection
BLUE bags are for non-soiled recyclable materials including plastic, paper, card board, glass etc.
GREEN bags are for green waste including organic kitchen waste such as fruit and vegetable peels, as well as garden waste, including grass cuttings, leaves etc. No soil is allowed in the green bags.
BLACK bags are for ‘wet’ waste, things that cannot be recycled.
Please don’t put bags out the day or night before removal.
Please wrap broken glass in newspaper before placing in bags to prevent injuries to workers.
Blue and green bags are collected on the same day as black bag refuse removal, but by different trucks – before or after the black bag collection and may be hours apart.
