GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality has started an investigation into a blockage of the wastewater pipeline serving the Tamsui industrial area which caused a significant spill yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 15 September).
This comes after a member of the public alerted the George Herald yesterday of a steady stream of wastewater filtering through from the Tamsui area into PW Botha Boulevard.
Responding to a query from the newspaper, Civil Engineering Director Regenald Wesso said when the blockage was cleared yesterday afternoon, a large amount of gravel was found inside the the sewerage line. A second blockage occurred later yesterday evening that would also be cleared and the area would be decontaminated.
Wesso said this specific line flows to the Tamsui municipal sewer pump station. "A full investigation into the origin of the gravel, as well as the overall condition of the pipeline, has been launched."
The blockage of the sewer pipeline caused a significant overflow.
