GEORGE NEWS - An alleged tortoise poacher from George was fined R2 500 for keeping two leopard tortoises tied to a pole in his garden in Thembalethu.
On 25 January, CapeNature responded to a complaint regarding a tortoise being held in captivity, allegedly without the necessary permits.
CapeNature law enforcement officials found two leopard tortoises at the residence and confirmed that the alleged poacher had no permits. Holes had been drilled into the shells of the animals and through these they were tied to a pole.
The animals were confiscated and the perpetrator fined.
According to CapeNature, tortoises are wild animals that form a part of our unique biodiversity and play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Activities involving wild animals are regulated by the Nature Conservation Ordinance, which requires a valid permit from CapeNature for possession, transport and captivity.
The public is urged to report any illegal activities to CapeNature for investigation on 087 087 9262. Maximum penalties are a fine of up to R10 000 or imprisonment for a period of up to two years, or both.
