Update
GEORGE NEWS - It seems that Thembalethu is fast becoming the murder capital of George.
The police are investigating three murders in this area after three men were killed in unrelated incidents. One was possibly linked to a courier vehicle robbery in Zone 4 just days before.
On Friday night, 30 May, a man was shot and killed at a house in the informal settlement in Zone 6.
According to information, the assailants were involved in a confrontation with a resident of this house and made an attempt on his life. However, he managed to escape after releasing his dog on the attackers. The suspects then turned their attention to the second man in the house and shot him, which killed him.
It is believed this murder may be linked to the armed robbery of a courier service delivery vehicle in Zone 4 on Thursday 29 May.
The delivery vehicle was robbed at about 11:00 when three men, one carrying a firearm, forced the driver out and stole some parcels out of the back before fleeing the scene.
According to reliable information, the deceased and his friend were possible eyewitnesses to the robbery. The murder, and the attempted attack on the other man in the house, could have been an act of retaliation. The suspects are still at large.
The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Esmerelda Jackson, urges the public to come forward with any information that could assist police with these investigations. Contact her on 079 894 1576.
George Herald has also contacted the courier company involved in the Zone 4 robbery for comment and will publish this in further updates as more information becomes available.
Young pregnant woman arrested for murder
A 29-year-old pregnant woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old man in Tabata Street in the early hours of Monday morning, 2 June.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, the victim sustained a stab wound to the neck and was transported to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Information obtained by George Herald suggests that the victim and a friend had been socialising outside at another friend’s informal dwelling on the night of the murder. The dwelling’s owner and his girlfriend (the suspect) were inside, asleep at the time.
The victim’s friend reportedly came in and woke the suspect to ask if he could charge his phone. She put his phone on a charger and subsequently joined the group outside. It is believed the victim and his friend then went to a nearby tavern to buy her some alcohol, but returned without the requested drinks.
“An argument broke out when the woman refused to return the cellphone, which had been left with her. A fight started inside the home, after which the victim and his friend left the property,” a source said.
As they were leaving, the victim fell down near the gate, at which point the female suspect stabbed him in the back. He collapsed a short while later.
She was arrested later that day on a charge of murder and was expected to appear in court during the week.
Police investigations continue.
Stabbing at a tavern
Late on Sunday night, 1 June, a 31-year-old man was fatally stabbed during an altercation with another person at a tavern in New Valley, Zone 9.
According to information received, the victim was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The suspect is currently unknown and remains at large.
According to Spies, the police were called to the hospital shortly after midnight and found the man with open wounds to his face and neck. “He was declared dead by medical personnel, and the circumstances surrounding the murder is under investigation,” he said.
