GEORGE NEWS - One suspect remains in custody after the George Tourism office in York Street was damaged by a fire on Sunday 30 June.
Four suspects were initially arrested in connection with alleged arson to the building, but according to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies, three men, aged 35, 35 and 47, were released because there was not sufficient evidence to link them to the incident.
"Investigation led to the arrest of Shurmaine da Silva (26)," said Spies.
Da Silva has already made her first court appearance after her arrest on Sunday 30 June. The case was postponed to Friday 2 August for a formal bail application.
Closed-circuit television footage obtained from the Fat Fish restaurant helped the police to link the accused to the incident.
The building sustained extensive smoke damage caused by the fire, that started at the back of the building.
Officials of the George Tourism office were alerted by ADT Security and employees of the Premier Express Inn across the road in York Street.
The fire brigade responded at 06:23 on Sunday morning and was able to control the fire.
Closed indefinitely
The George Tourism office will be closed indefinitely, with officials accommodated in the main municipal building until further notice. Contact George Tourism during office hours on 081 412 9995.
