GEORGE BUSINESS NEWS - Frogfoot Networks (Pty) Ltd, a licensed open access fibre infrastructure provider, has announced that it is extending its network coverage to further areas of George, with over 10 000 homes being passed.
Frogfoot started the build in George in mid-2018, bringing fibre to an area that had been previously under-serviced. Multiple suburbs have already gone live in the region, including Heatherlands, Glen Barrie, Bergsig, Denver Park, Eden, Loerie Park, Camfersdrift, Bodorp, Fernridge and Denneoord.
Plans for George include expansion into Central George, George South and Dormehlsdrift, with additional suburbs starting before the end of the year.
This Southern Cape expansion marked the beginning of the Garden Route expansion, as Frogfoot currently works in areas of Mossel Bay and is looking to expand further.
"Bringing fibre to smaller towns and supporting the local economy has been our primary focus. We have connected thousands of homes in George, as well as businesses, who now rely on stable and reliable connectivity," says Shane Chorley, head of sales at Frogfoot.
A major advantage of living in an area covered by an open-access infrastructure provider like Frogfoot is that users get more choice: with over 60 ISPs to choose from, they have access to the best pricing and services to suit their needs.
This includes selecting line speeds, whether their package is capped or uncapped, and even if their line is symmetrical (with bandwidth equally shared between uploads and downloads) or asymmetrical (more bandwidth set aside for data traffic in one direction, usually downloads).
Care will be taken to ensure trenching has minimal impact on residents. Municipal requirements will be strictly maintained, including cleaning up of work areas, and reinstatement of pavements, verges and driveways.
How fibre is changing the way SA uses the internet
Access to high-speed internet is even changing household consumption patterns in South Africa, with more people now watching videos online via their favourite YouTube channels or via video-on-demand services such as Netflix or Showmax. It also has a lower latency than other types of connectivity, making it perfect for online gaming.
In addition, with lockdown restrictions still in effect, fibre is the ideal method of connectivity for remote workers who use cloud-based productivity tools and applications and need to be able to upload and download multiple files - or even for content creators, who have to upload large images and videos or use online editing tools.
"More often than not, people tend to underestimate their bandwidth requirements," adds Chorley. "Since work from home (WFH) became a reality as part of the national lockdown, we have noticed that customers now consume up to 30% more data."
This tends to stem from additional time spent on working from home, bringing the classroom home and staying connected with friends and family.
