The George Heritage Trust awarded heritage plaques to one of the oldest public graveyards in George, the Memorium Street cemetery, last Wednesday 17 March. The plaques, sporting inscriptions in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, were affixed to the "lykshuisie", which was used to store grave-digging implements in the past. With about 1 200 graves, the historical cemetery dates back to 1881 and forefathers of many old George families are buried there. It is one of 13 cemeteries under the control of the George Municipality.
