GEORGE SAILING NEWS - The George Lakes Yacht Club celebrated its sailing season with its prize-giving and annual general meeting on Sunday.
The main trophies in the senior section were awarded for the Club Championship, which is the aggregate of the Presidents, Commodores and Sothebys series. The winner, Henry Paine, was awarded with the Parthenon trophy.
He also received the Finn tray as leading Laser sailor.
The Fireball tray was won by David Laing, while Matthew de Villiers got the Dabchick trophy and Dave Jones the Sonnet trophy.
The Parkes trophy was awarded to Dave Jones and the Sedgefield ARP&P trophy to Henry Paine.
In the junior section the York Cup went to winner of the season-long Junior Championships Series, Kyle Koeries. He also received the JJ trophy as Junior Optimist Champion.
The Junior Handicap trophy was awarded to Jean Paul Buys, the Toppies trophy for best Optimist went to Conrad Holm, the Dee trophy (best beginner) went to Morgan Lagerway and the Paul Trevelyan cup (best progress) was awarded to Tristan Boshoff.
One of the club's prestigious trophies, the Peter Grant trophy for Member of the Year, was presented to Dave and Fay Jones in recognition of their long service to the club, more recently in the upkeep of the club premises and grounds.
The Angus Hay trophy for dedication to sailing was awarded to Evelyn Osborne.
Certificates of achievement were awarded to JP Buys, Tristan Boshoff and Morgan Lagerway for achieving Junior Competency in High Performance and Regatta Sailing.
Certificates of achievement were awarded to Matthew de Villiers, Jordyn Soldin, Kyle Koeries, Thomas Lawa, Sean Vonk, James Vonk, Robyn Hellstrom, Ashley Layland and Conrad Holm for achieving Youth Competency in High Performance and Regatta Sailing.
Most of the long-serving committee were re-elected at the AGM, with Sandy Witteveen staying on as club president and David Laing as Commodore. Madeleine Koeries was elected as steward and Allister Koeries as a committee member.
