GEORGE NEWS - The 2017/18 sailing season was celebrated at the George Lakes Yacht Club with its annual prize-giving and annual general meeting last Sunday. The main awards were for the Club Championships, which is the aggregate of the Presidents, Commodores and Sotheby's Series.
Henry Paine won the Parthenon Trophy and was also awarded the Finn Tray as leading Laser. The Fireball Tray was won by David Laing, Hans Delport got the X Class Trophy, Matthew de Villiers the Dabchick Trophy and the Sonnet Trophy was won by Dave Jones. The Parkes Trophy was awarded to Charles Norman and the Sedgefield ARP&P Trophy was awarded to David Laing.
In the junior section Kyle Koeries won the York Cup and, as he sails an Optimist, also the JJ Trophy as junior Optimist Champion.

The Junior Handicap Trophy was awarded to Tristan Boshoff, the Toppies Trophy for best Optimist went to Sean Vonk, the Dee Trophy (best progress) went to Jean Paul Buys and the Paul Trevelyan Cup (best progress) was awarded to Conrad Holm.
Of the club's prestigious trophies, the Peter Grant Trophy for member of the year was presented to Malcolm Osborne and the Angus Hay Award went to outgoing club president, Di Turner. SA Sailing Eden District colours were awarded to James Vonk and Sean Vonk.
Certificates of achievement were awarded to 18 new sailors who learnt to sail last season, doing levels 1 and 2 of sailing as well as swimming. These certificates were also awarded to a further six who achieved sailing levels 3 and 4.
Certificates of achievement were awarded to the members of the Pacaltsdorp Primary team who competed in the inter schools regatta - Maleuq Amsterdam, Kirstie Lee Blaauw, Leandré Boom, Jonathan Hartnick and Caytlen Langley; the Glenwood House Preparatory team - Sean Vonk, Tristan Boshoff, Jordan Meyer and Marc Franklin, and the York High team consisting of Matthew de Villiers, Georgou Divaris and Robyn and James Hellstrom. Thoma Lawa and Kyle Koeries received certificates in recognition of their selection to the Western Cape Optimist team, which is going to compete in an international regatta in Qingdao, China, in August. At the AGM many of the long-serving committee members were re-elected. Sandy Witteveen was elected club president, Ingrid Buys as secretary and Melissa Boshoff as PRO. Lieza Lawa was elected as a committee member and Madeleine Koeries will be co-opted as a committee member.

Thomas Lawa and Kyle Koeries were awarded certificates of achievement by Evelyn Osborne for their selection to the Western Cape Optimist Team going to Qingdao, China in August.
