GEORGE NEWS - The Eagirls of the SWD will now compete in the ‘Curriecup’ series of women’s rugby in South Africa by being promoted to A section of the national competition.
The Eagirls succeeded in this historical breakthrough by beating the Griffons 31-5 in Cape Town at the weekend.
In the first half the Eagirls started slowly and it was evident that the players of both teams were nervous as the pressure of a final got to them.
The winning team only scored their first try after twenty minutes.
The first try was scored by the flyhalf, Samantha Joseph, after an excellent run by the number 8, Elize Arendse. This try was converted by Lebeth Oktober.
Eventually the nerves settled down and three more tries were scored in this half by Ella Erasmus, Nicolene Barendse an Danielle May. Only one of these tries was converted by Lebeth Oktober.
At halftime they were leading 24-0 which put the Griffons under tremendous pressure.
In the second half the Griffons had more possession and SWD struggled to put points on the board.
They came back with an unconverted try.
In the last 10 minutes SWD came back and finally the captain, Lebeth Oktober, scored a try which she also converted to make the final score 31-5.
The Eagirls did an excellent job and with this convincing victory made sure that they will be promoted to the A-section.
It was a great season for the team members as they were committed from the start of the season.
They deserve all the praises coming their way.
The management team also worked hard throughout the season and deserve credit for building this team into the champion side that they are.
