Thousands of fans packed the arrivals hall to get a glimpse of their favourite sports stars, as team South Africa returned with ten medals, their best Olympic tally ever.
As each athlete was presented, the crowd cheered louder and the celebration came to a climax as South Africa’s two gold medallists, Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya, were introduced.
Minister Mbalula says fans came out to make their voices heard.
“It shows that South Africa is a winning nation. Our people are proud of what they have achieved, and I am equally happy for the support that they have shown our athletes.”
Team SA will now have four more years to prepare for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo.
