GEORGE NEWS - Heart transplant recipient and avid golfer Derek Botes (58) participated in the World Transplant Games in Perth, Australia earlier this month and brought home a gold and a silver medal.
This year, 47 countries were represented at the World Transplant Games with a total of 1 600 athletes, of which 40 were from South Africa. SA has to date (20 April) received 31 medals at the Games: eight gold, 15 silver and eight bronze.
Derek attended the National Transplant Games in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in July 2022 where he qualified to attend the World Transplant Games this year.
He was selected to represent South Africa as an official transplant team member and received his national colours approved by SASCOC.
Derek won gold for South Africa in his doubles match on Monday 17 April and silver for in the individual stroke play game on 19 April.
