The length of your backswing and the distance you take your club back controls how far you hit the ball.
The longer the swing the more speed is created and this determines the distance.
When swinging think of a clock and the bottom of the clock is at six o' clock - address position and Impact - and the top of the swing is at 12 o' clock (full swing). Halfway in your swing will thus be 9 o' clock. So when practicing check how far you hit these positions in your swing and go according to these positions when facing this particular distance on the course.
You can use any wedge for pitching and this is a personal preference to control your Height and spin.
This will help you control your distance better knowing exactly how far you hit your clubs at a specific point in your swing.
