SOCCER NEWS - On Tuesday afternoon, 12 August, the Thembalethu High School U19 soccer team surprised Imizamo Yethu with a late equalising goal in the Kay Motsepe U19 Schools Cup elimination rounds on the Zone 9 sport field.
Linamandla Mntonga of Imizamo Yethu had a superb game launching offensive play from the flanks - Mntonga scored the opening goal, making it 1-0 from the penalty spot just after a reckless foul from Thembalethu High defenders.
In a balanced first half where both sides gave star performances, Thembalethu High School players Ingamihle Busakwe and Milani Madolo stood out with their rock-solid defence.
However, no goals were scored in the first half.
The second half saw Anele Ntloko and Linamandla Mntonga leading Imizamo Yethu's attack strategy on the wings, resulting in a penalty scored by Mntonga. Imizamu Yethu seemed set to win, but their hopes were dashed when Liqhame Malgas levelled the score to 1-1 in the last minutes of the game.
The winning school will represent George in the Regional Kay Motsepe U19 competition in Plettenberg Bay this coming weekend. The winners will be determined in the last games this coming Thursday.
Five high schools participated in this year's competition: Jonga High School, George Royal Academy, Imizamo Yethu Secondary School, Thembalethu High School and Heatherlands High School.
