SOCCER NEWS - Nelson Mandela University's Madibaz FC produced an impressive performance in the preliminary rounds of the annual Geolfa Heritage Soccer Tournament on Sunday 20 September, defeating Future Stars 2-0 to secure a place in the last 16.

Under the guidance of coaches Zonwabele Dlala and Zanoxolo Hlwayi, the regional men's league outfit controlled much of the encounter and created several opportunities from the outset.

Future Stars goalkeeper Lelethu Khohlakala made an excellent save from the students' first corner to keep his side in the contest. Madibaz continued to apply pressure, with Kamvelihle Dano narrowly missing with a powerful header.

The pressure eventually paid off when Luyolo Mlungwana broke the deadlock to give Madibaz a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Future Stars came out strongly after the break in search of an equaliser, but Madibaz remained dangerous on the flanks. 

A set-piece provided the second goal, with Dano rising highest to power a header past Khohlakala.

Thulani Masondo controlled the tempo as Madibaz comfortably managed the closing stages. Ayabonga Mntengwana and Jadan Mtonga tried to inspire a comeback, but Madibaz held firm to seal a deserved victory.

The 16 teams that will fight it out in the knockout stages are Super City, Southern Academy, All Stars, Rising Stars, NMU Madibaz, Future Stars, France United, Mighty Conquerors, Black Cats, Heaven Stars, Silver Stars, Western Tigers, Simunye, Fast Eleven, Young Killers, and then either Inkonjane or Paris United, who have yet to play their last game to determine which of them goes through.
