GEORGE FOOTBALL NEWS - The Thembalethu side Diego Masters did not manage to register maximum points in the Safa Eden Promotional League last Saturday at the Lawaaikamp Stadium. Diego Masters faced a tough opponent, last season's SAB League champions Eastern City. Eastern City boosted their survival bid in the SAB League with a 3-2 victory which earned them three points. The goals were scored by Athenkosi Baliti, Nyameko Gcuwa and Siyabonga Gagu for Eastern City, and by Bonga Lungisa and Zamile Mantla for Diego Masters.
Eastern City launched the attack using their left wing Nyameko Gcuwa (no 13) and right wing Luzuko Sabelesiza (no 10), supported by Mthokozisi Senzele. Diego Masters' centre, Asahleli "Scara" Mrwebi, and Luphumlo Selame worked hard to fend off the attack. Winger Zamile Mantla was on fire on the right flank, creating chances for Diego Masters' Bango Lungisa (no 10), but Lungisa missed the goal. Another scoring opportunity was bungled when Luphumlo Selami failed to convert from a beautiful ball passed to him by the hard-working Mrwebi.
Soon Eastern City middle fielders Siyabonga "Chippa" Gagu and Mthetho Lwazi were controlling the game, breaking the right side of Diego Masters. Nyameko Gcuwa delivered a marvellous cross into the box where Athenkosi Baliti turned it into the first goal of the game, making it 1-0 for Eastern City. Forty minutes into the game, Diego Masters missed another chance to equalise and the exciting first half ended 1-0.
The second half saw some of the most entertaining moments and most of the goals, with Diego Masters pushing to put a score on the board. Disappointingly their target man failed several times to convert the opportunities created by Mrwebi.
A top-notch corner kick by Diego Masters' Luthando Ntloko found Bonga Lungisa who delivered a beautiful header, equalising the score. Nyameko Gcuwa scored goal number two for Eastern City to make it 2-1. Diego Masters stayed on the attack, using the speed of Zamile Mantla on the right side.
This paid off when Mantla scored goal number two for Diego Masters, making it 2-2. Another attempt by Nyameko Ndwebisa of Eastern City was blocked by Diego Masters goalkeeper, Luvuyo Ncamile. Both teams were straining for the winning goal, but in the end Eastern City's consistent attempts paid off, with Siyabonga Gagu scoring to clinch their victory of 3-2.
