NATIONAL NEWS - The following alert was issued by SAWS on Monday, 22 July 2019: “A cold front accompanied by a steep upper air trough is expected to make landfall over the Western Cape Province on Monday evening. Another intense cold front, with a centre low pressure of 986hPa, also associated with a steep upper trough, will make landfall on Tuesday late morning, with a secondary development in the afternoon.
Strong to gale force interior winds are expected over the Western Cape ahead of both cold fronts.
Wind speeds of 40-60km/h can be expected across the Province, with wind speeds of 65-75km/h, gusting 80-100km/h in places over the Karoo areas, Breede Valley as well as the Cape Peninsula. This may also include places over the West Coast District on Tuesday.”

Early warnings were disseminated to all disaster management centres to monitor response and recovery efforts. All services are placed on high alert.
City of Cape Town
Flooding in informal settlements in Masiphumelele in Fish Hoek, Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay and Makhaza in Khayelitsha, where approximately 3 000 dwellings have been affected. In Imizamo Yethu, seven dwellings were destroyed by an uprooted tree. Roofs have been damaged by strong winds in Mamre, Strand, Gugulethu and Belhar. Storm-related electricity disruptions are being experienced in Plattekloof and Rylands. City Departments are assisting the affected communities, including making alternative accommodation available and SASSA has been informed around the need for humanitarian relief.
West Coast District Municipality
No incidents were reported.
Garden Route District Municipality
The Disaster Co-ordination Centre at Ladismith has been activated. Strong winds damaged 20 informal structures in Ladismith. Assessments in Zoar, Calitzdorp as well as van Wyksdorp is still being done.
Cape Winelands Municipality
Stellenbosch Municipality: The Department of Social Development has captured data on the Fire Incident reported earlier, as follows: ? 38 x Households affected. ? 3 x Formal Brick structures affected. ? 26 x Informal Structures completely destroyed. ? 9 x Informal Structures partially damaged. ? A total number of 117 people were affected (victims) and have been requested to reside with family and friends. Breede Valley: In Rawsonville at Geelkampie informal settlement, water levels are rising and localised flooding occurring.
Central Karoo District Municipality
Wind overturned trailer of truck between 3 Susters and Beaufort West. No injuries reported. No road closures.
Overberg District Municipality
No incidents were reported.
