NATIONAL NEWS - The chairperson of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Dr Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza has paid tribute to the late Mme Mable Khumalo, mother of legendary footballer and now soccer analyst Doctor Khumalo.
Mme Khumalo died at Netcare Union Hospital on 31 March.
Khoza described Mme Khumalo as a member of one of South Africa’s outstanding football families, having given birth to a leading icon and kingpin of not just Bafana Bafana’s success in the late 1990s and early 2000s but also a stalwart and midfield maestro of Kaizer Chiefs.
“I am saddened to announce that this outstanding football family has lost its matriarch,” said Khoza. “Our hearts and prayers are with the Khumalo family. We received the sad news of the passing of your dear mother Mme Mable Khumalo at this difficult time when our nation and the world are in lockdown.
“We are grateful to Ausi Mable for her role besides the legendary late Eliakim ‘Pro’ Khumalo for nurturing an era-defining talent, Doctor Khumalo. May her soul repose peacefully.”
Like his son Doctor, Eliakim or Elkiam Khumalo, born in 1940 and passed away on 27 August 1996, was a football midfielder who plied his trade with Moroka Swallows and later Kaizer Chiefs.
Kaizer ‘Chencha Guluva’ Motaung, the kingpin of Orlando Pirates deserters of the 1970s who founded AmaKhosi, described Mme Khumalo’s death as ‘difficult, coming as it does during a testing time for South Africa and the world at large with this Covid-19 disease’.
At the time of going to press, funeral arrangements had not been announced.
