The 23-year-old woman was taken in for questioning after she reported her child stolen to police.
“She went to the police station, crying that her child was stolen,” Constable Connie Mohanedi said.
“She was taken in for questioning and it emerged that she took a taxi to the railway station and left her child there.”
She said the mother admitted to having left her child so she could attend a party nearby.
Two men brought the child to the Cullinan police client service centre.
They said they found the crying child wrapped in a baby blanket next to a railway line.
