NATIONAL NEWS - The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) believes that the permit granted to a local rhino breeder to auction horns online won't be effectively regulated.
The High Court in Pretoria recently granted breeder John Hume a permit as instructed by the High Court on Sunday.
The Environmental Affairs Department's Moses Rannditsheni says it wants access to the online auction to ensure the trade of rhino horn is transparent.
“We want to monitor the sale to ensure it complies with our policies.”
But the IFAW’ Joseph Okori says it will not be easy to monitor every move.
“Some of the advertisements are in Chinese which means it doesn’t target local people.”
Okori says this is unfortunate for the animals and for those who have been trying hard to save the species.
