NATIONAL NEWS - The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has confirmed that a second fire broke out at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital early this morning.
Kempton Express reports the latest blaze affected the hospital’s main outpatient department (OPD), located adjacent to the accident and emergency unit that was damaged in a fire on Saturday.
Firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni’s Fire Department are currently on site responding to the latest incident.
Motalatale Modiba, the head of communications for the Gauteng Department of Health, says the situation is being monitored closely and that further details will be released as they become available.
“The Gauteng Department of Health can confirm that the fire brigades from the City of Ekurhuleni Fire Department are currently on site attending to what looks like another fire accident at the Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital’s main outpatient department referred to as the OPD,” Modiba said.
“This area is adjacent to the accident and emergency unit that burnt on Saturday night. More details will be shared later as the matter is still investigated.”
Following the previous fire on Saturday, the hospital’s emergency services had already been operating under a business continuity plan, with ambulances diverted and walk-in patients rerouted to designated service points.
This second incident has added to the strain, with some patients seen queuing outside the nearby Zamokuhle Private Hospital this morning.
