The 33-year-old appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court yesterday.
He’s alleged to have beaten the baby to death during a domestic argument last week.
The accused faces intimidation and murder charges.
He’ll make a second court appearance on 2 March for consultation with his legal aid lawyer and for bail information.
The state has indicated it will oppose bail.
Counsellors from Ilitha Labantu, a Gugulethu based organisation that helps abused women and children, attended court proceedings.
The organisation’s Nomaxaba Mqela says they’re providing counselling.
“This one is an extraordinary case, the way he killed the child. We visited the family and everyone in the house was traumatised.”
