Previously build alongside the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as a part of joined venture, the now Polish built Crafter is a Volkswagen exclusive and apart from incorporating the Wolfsburg automaker’s latest design language, will have the option of front or rear-wheel drive having been solely offered with the latter layout until now.

For South Africa, the Crafter will be available in both panel van and Kombi bodystyles, and with a choice of three lengths; 5 986 mm, 6 836 mm and in the case of the van, 7 391 mm. Respective heights are 2 355 mm, 2 625 mm and 2 637 mm.

In terms of dimensions, front-wheel drive variants have a maximum cargo capacity of 10.7 m³ and gross weight of 3.5-3.55 tons, while all models ride on a MacPherson strut front suspension with the option of five different solid rear axle options.

Aside from its new platform, the Crafter also features a segment first electro-mechanical power steering system, and an entire new clutch of safety systems either optional or standard, such as Park Assist with Trailer Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist Emergency Braking, Automatic Post-Collision Braking, reverse camera, Rear Traffic Alert and cornering LED headlights.

Notable standard specification items, depending on the model selected, includes electric windows, wireless remote central locking and storage areas for smartphones, gloves and other electronic devices.

Whereas the MAN equivalent in Europe is offered in three additional outputs, 75kW/300Nm, 90kW/300Nm and 130kW/410Nm, the latter with a second turbocharger, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the Crafter will initially only be offered with a six-speed manual ‘box and producing 103kW/340Nm.

Standard on all models is a two year/unlimited km warranty and five year/120 000km service plan.
