With the exception of the Peugeot 508, Volvo V60 and the new S60, as well as the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace slated to arrive next year, all of the other top rated model have already been or recently gone on sale in South Africa, namely the new BMW X5, Audi Q3 and Hyundai Santa Fe.
In a statement however, Euro NCAP General Secretary, Michiel van Ratingen, expressed concern at the zero stars awarded to the terminally aged Fiat Panda that received four stars when it debuted back in 2011, and the one star obtained by the all-new Jeep Wrangler that touched down in Europe five months ago.
“It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new car being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance. It is high time we saw a product from the Fiat-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors,” van Ratingen said.
Of the five star rated models though, problems were also detected with the fitment of the panoramic roof in the Santa Fe causing damage to the curtain airbags, a problem since rectified by Hyundai, while the knee airbag in the X5 failed to deploy properly.
“Despite the work done by manufacturers during the development of their vehicles, Euro NCAP still sees a lack of robustness in some basic areas of safety. To be fair, the Audi Q3, Jaguar I-Pace, Peugeot 508 and Volvo V60/S60 have set the standard against which others are judged this time, and other manufacturers could do well to follow their example. The I-Pace, especially, demonstrates that future vehicles will be good for the environment but also provide high levels of safety," van Ratingen said.
