The recipient of a dismal two star rating in January, one of the lowest on record, the addition of Pre-Collision Assist made of Pedestrian Detection, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning, as well as Lane Keeping Assist, automatic airbag deactivation and revised restraint system, has lifted its overall score to three stars with a major improvement being the safety assist category.
While driver and child scores remained unchanged at 72% and 32%, pedestrian safety went up from 68% to 72%, while safety assist shot up from a lowly 16% to 61%. Euro NCAP has however stated that a upshot in child safety could have resulted in a four or five star rating, although it did commend Ford for quickly reacting on its initial findings.
"While a three-star rating is unexceptional, the updates Ford have introduced have not only made Mustang’s safety better in key areas but also show that the company cares about its customers and safety reputation," Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratigen, said in a statement.
Aside from the Mustang, a total of five vehicles were awarded the maximum five stars with the eagerly awaited Alfa Romeo Stelvo scoring an overall driver safety rating of 97%, the highest recorded so far. Others included the Hyundai i30, Opel / Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport, Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Arteon.
Somewhat surprisingly, the recently unveiled Honda Civic hatch could only amass four stars despite ratings of 88% for driver protection, 67% for child safety, 75% for pedestrians and 88% for safety assist.
