The day’s racing started at two in the afternoon with bike and quad bike racing. An increased number of quads took part which indicates that the sport is growing.
The track conditions were perfect for bikes and resulted in some close racing.
The Speedway School operated between the heats and gave an opportunity for potential riders to get a feel of these awesome 500 cc no brakes, no gears and very fast highly specialised bikes.
After the bikes and quads followed the annual SWD versus EP Buddy Fuller Trophy seasonal challenge.
Entries came from all over the Western and Eastern Cape with visiting drivers from as far as Bloemfontein, Rustenburg, Cape Town, Worcester and of course the arch rivals from Port Elizabeth.
Racing was fast and furious with loads of drama and unexpected results. The Midget class was dominated by Arthur Schafer from Worcester until he got tangled up with another car’s wheels that sent his car upwards and over to land back on its wheels, but with serious damage to the suspension that put him out of the running for the finals.
In an earlier incident local ace Charl Walters also had a crash and his car was too damaged to continue.
It was a night of many ‘pap’ wheels which cheated top modified V8 driver Elton Gilmer of the trophy. In the same class, local legend Bennie Greyling withdrew due to mechanical gremlins.
In another cruel twist of fate the infamous magic green beetle of Neels van Rooyen was robbed of certain victory by an incident on the second last lap that resulted in him slowing down through a misinterpreted flag signal from a marshal due to an opposition car getting hung up on the wall and obstructing the track.
Through the mishaps there was some incredibly quick and close racing. The end result was a victory for the SWD drivers (1 322 points) over EP (1101 points).
The George Motor Club thanked all drivers for making the last event in 2010 memorable and also their sponsor Expression Signs.
The next meeting is on 22 January.
