Update
GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) Fire Services is currently assisting George Municipality with a fire, which flared up in a valley between the two neighbouring areas of Touwsranten and Hoekwil.
This fire was extinguished twice before, however flare-ups occurred mainly due to it burning (undetected) under a thick ground layer, including a mixture of alien invasive and indigenous vegetation.
The fire surfaced only after it has burned through the top soil.
A decision was taken earlier to wet this area with numerous buckets of water with the huyey helicopter. The helicopter was deployed by George Municipality Fire Services, as crews found it difficult to get sufficient water into the area.
Crews are currently busy with mopping up. For precautionary measures, the crews will however only work until the last light as the danger of large trees falling exist with two that have already gone down.
A night crew will monitor the area for further flare-ups and mopping up set to be proceeded early tomorrow morning.
Report fire related incidents to the Garden Route Emergency Centre at 044 805 5071.
