Update

GEORGE NEWS - George Fire Brigade, assisted by the Garden Route District Municipality's Fire Brigade, attended to a veldfire to the south-west of Rooirivierrif on Saturday 15 January.

The municipality said according to the George Fire Brigade, the inaccessibility of roads towards the scene made the firefighting very challenging. Therefore, a request for helicopter assistance was issued, to which Denneoord Airbase responded speedily.

Although the firefighters experienced abnormally hot weather conditions on the day, they managed to bring the fire under control and ground workers were able to start with the mopping-up operations.

The cause and size of the fire are unknown at this stage and the good news is that no infrastructure was damaged during the fire.

Acting Municipal Manager Michele Gratz commended the firefighters for a job well done.
