OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Greater Oudtshoorn Mayor Chris Macpherson expressed concern over a drastic increase in Covid-19 infections over the past four days in the sub-district.
In a statement issued by Oudtshoorn Municipality, statistics from the Western Cape Department of Health released on Friday 6 August are quoted.
The municipality says the sharp increase follows reports of illegal mass gatherings and "sloppy behaviour" by the public of not adhering to Covid-19 regulations and protocols.
The sub-district reported 101 new infections between Monday and Thursday (2-5 August).
The municipality says it cannot be ruled out that entertainment and sporting events reportedly held over the past weekend can be attached to the drastic increase.
"Between Wednesday and Thursday, the Greater Oudtshoorn has recorded 59 additional Covid-19 infections. This is the highest daily increase since the beginning of the third wave," said Macpherson.
“Our citizens' attitude to Covid-19 protocols are disappointing and even life-threatening. The total disregard of the majority of people not wearing masks in public and failure to maintain social distancing is the reason why Oudtshoorn has the highest percentage mortality rate.
"The police and law enforcement will take the necessary steps to protect its citizens and dossiers have been opened to investigate the flagrant disregard of the Disaster Management Act experienced this last weekend," said Macpherson.
“If you do not value your own life, at least value your own family and friends’ lives. Our hospitals are already filled and we haven't even reached the peak of this new killer wave.”
