GEORGE NEWS - The George electrotechnical department is embarking on a process to install tariff meters for occupants of the Rosedale TRA who do not have prepayment profiles. Although electricity was installed in the area some four years ago, the assigned owners of 143 houses in the area never occupied their structures.
Other families ended up staying there, either by informal renting or other means. They could not receive legal electricity, as they were not the legal occupiers of the temporary erven.
As the only missing link in the electricity supply was the uninstalled tariff meter, many of the occupants connected themselves illegally.
At a recent council meeting, the occupants of the 143 structures have been acknowledged as the legal occupants of the erven and as a result, tariff metres can now be installed. There are 143 houses in the TRA that need to be made safe as illegal connections remain the top cause of fires in the settlement.
