GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - "Our bodies' capabilities to be strengthened enough to fight off foreign invaders depend mostly on our immunity strength and health," says Elenia Kolokotronis, a clinical nutritionist.
She specialises in spherical health and wellness.
"Like our homes that have alarm systems or burglar bars to ward off intruders, this is what our immune system does when we are attacked by a virus."
Even more astounding, continues Kolokotronis, is that our immune system's memory banks any previous infection and recognises it as soon as we are reinfected with the same illness.
"This way, our bodies know how to defend us against it.
"What we eat is the biggest predetermining factor for our immunity strength. Based on what foods we are eating, we need to increase white blood cell productivity as this is vital in fighting infections and allows us to recover faster."
Looking at foods high in antioxidants and that are anti-inflammatory in order to keep the body balanced and healthy, aids the immune system by lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and eliminating free radicals and toxins.
Foods that are the strongest in doing so are:
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Raw, unprocessed honey
- Tumeric
- Broccoli
- Spinach
- Red bell peppers
- Organic, natural dairy products
- Raw nuts and seeds
- Pawpaw
- Kiwi fruit
- Blue berries
