GEORGE NEWS - In just one hour, over 250 bags of recyclable litter were diverted from the landfill when learners from Pacaltsdorp High School celebrated Call to Earth Day on Thursday 3 November with a major clean-up near the Schaapkop River.
The initiative was organised by the school's Green Club and Celeste van Rensburg of the Garden Route Waste Warriors, an offshoot of the Garden Route Dam Action Group (Gardag).
Project co-ordinator of street cleansing at George Municipality Karin Stoffels arranged for her team to pick up and remove the non-recyclables in black bags.
"This was an amazing team effort between learners, volunteers and municipal staff," says Portfolio Councillor for Community Services: Parks, Refuse and Environmental Jean Safers.
Douw Bezuidenhout, Magdelena Gevan and Andile Mobo of Henque Waste rewarded the happy learners with R5 for each bag of recyclable material collected.
Thembinkosi Poni transported the mountain of bagged plastic, paper and bottles to Henque Waste's recycling facility in George Industria.
