GEORGE NEWS - A Multi-functional Operational Command Centre, enhanced collaboration with the police, and more law enforcement officers on call are among the focus points of George Municipality's Integrated Community Safety Strategy.
The Community Safety division on Friday 6 September presented their new strategy, which aims to ensure better safety to citizens and visitors of the growing city.
Mayor Jackie von Brandis, Portfolio Councillor for Community Safety Brendon Adams and other members of the George municipal mayoral committee visited a renovated facility in Mitchell Street, next to the George Fire Station, that will serve as the Integrated Operational Command Centre - a key component of the safety strategy.
This facility houses the CCTV room, which showcases more than 700 cameras installed across George. These cameras monitor criminal activity and potential threats, safeguarding municipal property and detecting unlawful actions.
"More than R5 million has been invested in refurbishing the Integrated Operational Command Centre during the last financial year. This facility will enhance collaboration among all security stakeholders," said Lee-Anne Meiring, senior manager for Community Safety. The multi-faceted strategy includes technological advancements, institutional development, a dedicated response unit, strengthened relationships with other law enforcement agencies such as the police, piloting a business intelligence and analytics unit.
Von Brandis said, "While cities offer opportunities for people from all walks of life, they also concentrate crime and violence. This strategy aims to mitigate safety risks and address the challenges that accompany the city's growth."
