GEORGE NEWS - The Hawks paid George Municipality another surprise visit today when they seized several documents and electronic equipment from the office of the Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha.
This raid is unrelated to the search and seizure conducted at the George Municipality in April last year.
Captain Philani Nkwalase, Hawks spokesperson, confirmed a few minutes ago that the Hawks Commercial Crime Investigation team carried out a search and seizure at George Municipality offices earlier today. At this stage he did not want to disclose the names of people of interest.
"This investigation relates to the alleged fraud and corruption emanating from the failure to follow due process regarding the appointment and filling of a vacant post," said Nkwalase.
He furthermore said that the private homes of some of the people of interest were raided, as well as several offices. "There is no arrest at this stage, pending the ongoing investigation. Documents and electronic equipment were seized and will be subjected to further investigation."
According to James-Brent Styan, spokesperson for the ministry of local government in the Western Cape, they are aware of the Hawks' visit today.
The George Herald tried to contact Trevor Botha, but has been unable to reach him.
