GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - "No fireworks, crackers or Chinese lanterns on Guy Fawkes day or any other day."
This is the instruction of the Garden Route District Municipality.
Considering the raging wildfires of the past ten days and the severe drought in regions of the district, the Garden Route District Municipality and local municipalities in the region advise residents and visitors that the discharge of fireworks from any area (including your own backyard) is not permitted at any time.
Discharging of any crackers or emergency flares for celebratory purposes are also prohibited.
"We appeal to residents and visitors not to use so-called Chinese lanterns as these pose a significant fire risk," spokesperson Herman Pieters said. He added that the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) also asks people not to use sky lanterns as they float out to sea and are often reported as emergency flares, which in turn cause Sea Rescue hours of fruitless searching.
