GEORGE NEWS - A 77-year-old man was robbed at an Absa ATM at the Heather Park Shopping Centre at about 18:00 on Tuesday 10 February.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that the complainant was using the ATM when an unknown male allegedly pushed him aside, took his bank card and made off.
The victim later found unauthorised transactions being processed from his account.
Chantelle Potgieter, the Heather Park Centre's portfolio manager, confirmed that the suspect was identified through the centre's CCTV surveillance system, and was traced and arrested the next day.
She emphasised that this incident demonstrates the effectiveness of the centre's advanced camera network and on-site security presence, which continuously monitor activity throughout the premises.
"Our security and surveillance systems are comprehensive and highly effective. The fact that the suspect was identified and apprehended within 24 hours speaks to the strength of the measures already in place, particularly as the centre is frequently visited by elderly clients," she said.
The centre management has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure environment for all shoppers and visitors.
