Update
GEORGE NEWS - Damian du Plessis (40), who is facing charges of arson and defeating the ends of justice following a house fire in George South, appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday 20 August.
He was represented by Legal Aid attorney Onelisa Zibonda, while Vandana Premchand appeared for the State.
The court heard that nothing had been received regarding verification of Du Plessis’s residential address.
A number of new statements have been received as part of the ongoing investigation. The court also heard that the DNA and post-mortem results are not yet available.
Du Plessis was arrested after a house in George South caught fire shortly after 05:00 on Monday 3 August. A body was discovered inside the house after the fire was extinguished.
Du Plessis abandoned his bail application at this stage.
The matter was postponed to 29 September pending further investigation. Du Plessis will remain in custody.
The identity, gender and cause of death of the deceased have not been released.
