GEORGE NEWS - Chippie, a dog from Blanco, was abandoned and surrendered to the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) after his family found his grooming demands too high. However, Sam Trietsch of the GRSPCA says he only needs a good bath now and then and the occasional trim.
"He doesn't even shed," she says.
"He's a charming little dog with a big heart. At first, he was heartbroken, sad and confused. It was clear that he felt let down. He couldn't understand what he had done wrong."
But, once he realised he was safe with the GRSPCA, his playful and affectionate nature began to shine through.
"He will make a delightful companion and takes time to trust new people, but who could blame him? Once he forms a bond, he is incredibly loyal and devoted," says Trietsch.
Chippie would do best in a home that can provide him with plenty of affection and, of course, an assortment of toys to keep him entertained.
Things to consider when you want a dog
• Grooming needs: Some dogs need minimal grooming, while others require regular upkeep. Be prepared.
• Choose the right breed: Different breeds have different energy levels, grooming needs, and temperaments. Pick one that suits your lifestyle.
• Time commitment: Dogs need training, companionship and daily exercise. Make sure you have enough time to care for them.
• Financial responsibility: Factor in costs like food, vet care, grooming, and insurance. Unexpected medical bills can be expensive.
• Training and socialisation: Proper training and early socialisation help dogs become well-behaved and confident.
• Home and space: Ensure your dog has enough space and a secure garden.
• Long-term commit-ment: Dogs can live 10 to 15 years. Think about how they'll fit into your plans.
• Adopting vs buying: Consider adopting from a shelter. If buying, choose a reputable breeder.
• Pet-proofing: Remove hazards, provide a comfy bed, and stock up on toys and essentials.
• Patience and love: Dogs need time to adjust. Be patient, caring, and ready for a lifelong bond.
