GEORGE NEWS - Conville Police Station's commander, Colonel Anton Stander, has urged motorists and pedestrians travelling along Nelson Mandela Boulevard to remain extremely cautious and vigilant.
"Cellphone-related crime is on the increase," Stander said. "Make sure you do not display your cellphone openly. Do not use your cellphone while driving and keep it out of sight when walking in the street."
According to Stander, cellphone thieves often operate in groups. "One person distracts the motorist on one side of the vehicle while another opens the door on the opposite side and grabs something - usually a cellphone or a handbag."
Stander emphasised the importance of keeping vehicle doors locked and advised pedestrians, where possible, to avoid areas in which groups of men are waiting with pangas.
"This is a serious problem, and we are doing our best to bring it under control," he said.
