GEORGE NEWS - After covering 849km on the road for the 10-year-old Marlo Buys, a cancer survivor from Cape Town, Michael Wynne, is preparing to do it all over again.
Wynne will set off tomorrow, 25 September, on a second walk-and-ride (walking and hitchhiking) journey from Kraaifontein to George to raise funds and awareness for Marlo and help his family meet the costs of his medical care.
As Wynne's journey combines walking with lifts from motorists, his exact arrival time cannot be confirmed at this stage.
Meanwhile, Marlo's family and supporters are planning a fundraising walk on Saturday morning, starting from Ground Zero Bike and Trail Park at 08:00 and ending at Unity Park.
Marlo will be brought to Unity Park at 09:00 in a convoy led by the Underground Kings. The event will run until 11:00, and Wynne hopes to raise funds towards Marlo's medical expenses.
Wynne completed his first 849km walk-and-ride journey from Kraaifontein to George last weekend, where he met Marlo and his mother, Angelique, and spent a night with them.
He said the experience strengthened his determination to do more to help the family, and so he decided to do a second journey. This will bring the total distance Wynne will have covered in support of Marlo to about 1 640km.
These journeys are part of Wynne's ongoing efforts to raise awareness and financial support for Marlo, who has spent much of the past four years in and out of hospital with serious health problems.
According to the information provided by the family, Marlo has kidney, heart and liver problems, and his family hopes to consult medical specialists to determine whether he has a rare tumour of the adrenal gland known as a pheochromocytoma.
The necessary medical examinations and specialist treatment are expected to place a significant financial burden on the family.
A brave boy
Despite the challenges he faces, Marlo remains positive. His mother describes him as a brave warrior and says he has a heart of gold.
Wynne, a two-time stage 4 cancer survivor, founded the Walk-a-Ride Foundation in 2019 following his own cancer battle.
He has since undertaken numerous long-distance journeys to raise awareness of cancer and support people affected by the disease.
